FOUNDER'S STORY
As told by our Founder, Bill Levey:
In 2015, I finally went on a dive trip to Indonesia that I had been dreaming about for years. There were some amazing moments off Komodo Island, but when I got to my second destination, the Lembeh Strait (known the 'macro capital of the world' for its biodiversity), I was completely disheartened to see that many of these creatures I had come to see and photograph were actually living in plastic and trash. It was all over the ocean floor, on the beaches and on land (never mind the microplastics we can't easily see). It bothered me so much that I cancelled the next 3 days of diving I had planned and headed inland.
At the time, I had patented a sanitary improvement to coffee lids and was working on bringing that to market, although I realized that even though I would only be adding a small amount of material, I didn't want to contribute to putting more plastic into the world. I wanted to do something to reduce it.
The more I learned the more I realized that if we don't turn this [plastic use and production] thing around, we are in trouble. We may not be able to stop it completely but there are things we can do. But where do you even start?
Coffee lids are one of the worst offenders - a small item that tens of millions of us use every single day, none of which get recycled. I set out to design the best coffee lid available, and talked to hundreds - maybe thousands - of people about coffee lids. Most of them had opinions that they had never really vocalized, or behaviors that they hadn't really acknowledged. We took all of this feedback, looked at every other lid ever made, and ultimately create a better coffee lid. A lid that is thoughtfully designed, and actually enhances the experience of drinking coffee. And most importantly, a lid that is made from a sustainable, compostable material and that actually performs better than existing plastic lids.
It didn't make sense that coffee shops and cafes would care so much about the product they serve (i.e. coffee, tea) and then serve it in a cheap, toxic package. But not everyone felt that way - they just didn't have an alternative that was high-quality and well designed.
We wanted to create a solution that shop owners and customers could love. So we did.
We're proud to be able to introduce our lids to the market in early 2018.
